I have purchased three of these cameras for my daughters and all three of them broke in the first year of use. The screen broke on two of them, one in my daughters pocket and the other in her purse, they are ridiculously delicate cameras. The other one just stopped working, the lens froze in the out position. so I sent it in to Nikon because it was still under warranty. I just received the response. They said it was impact damage because it had a small dent in the corner. I don’t know when that dent may have occurred but I don’t think that’s why the camera didn’t work. It was working fine, I know because I was using it, I had been using it all day and then it stopped working, no impact was involved. Be advised that if something happens to your camera and you send it in to Nikon, make sure it has no scratches or dents, they will make that the cause of your camera malfunction, thus invalidating the warranty.
Just google “Nikon Coolpix lens error”, and you will get almost 40,000 hits!. I have had this camera for only 9 months and now it is worthless. Lens failure is apparently very common with this camera. It is not durable. Complete waste of $200. Save your money and do not buy this camera. The reviews are horrible for a reason.
I actually liked the camera for the few months it worked. Then, one day, it slipped and I caught it half a second later, so it didn’t fall down, just got a shake. It stopped working immediately: the lenses got stuck out, and the screen kept saying “Lens Error.” I googled the problem, and it turned out many, many people had the exact same problem with this model. Why didn’t I look this up before buying it? The suggested remedy was to give the lens a light tap, and, if it didn’t work, a stronger one. Twenty taps later, it started working again for a few minutes, then got stuck again. I am outside the US now, and I don’t even want to think what it would take to have it returned/fixed/etc.
Don’t buy it. Look for something else and do your research.
I bought this from Target 3 months ago. 4 days ago I went to take a picture and the screen was white. I contacted customer service and they told me to take the battery out and let it set over night claiming that would fix it. No dice! I hooked it up to my computer to upload my pictures, and I got an error message saying there was an error with the device. As I plugged it in, the lens went to retract and jammed. I reported that to Nikon and they said they would not repair any device that has any physical damage, even though it was obviously a manufacturing defect. So now I am out $150 a mere 3 months after I bought it.
Do Not Buy This Product! Unless of course, you like to waste money.
I bought this camera from a Staples near me a little over a year ago. I have an SLR and was looking for something compact and light to take on vacation. From day 1 it’s never worked right. It refuses to take still pictures in bright light, even though it’ll shoot video in the same light conditions. Almost everything comes out blurry. I’m not a beginner camera user, but for point and shoot relaibility, I’m horribly disappointed in Nikon. It’s actually so bad I’ve taken my SD card out and put it back in the box to sell at a yard sale for $10 just to get rid of it.
It’s slick looking and portable, and fits in a pocket really well. The screen is great. The actual camera part is horrendous. Save your money and buy a different point and shoot.
